Greece Digital Nomad Visa: The Complete 2026 Guide
Greece's digital nomad route lets you live here while working for employers or clients abroad. Since February 2026 there is only one way in — and a few things people get wrong before they apply.

Greece's digital nomad route is for people from outside the EU who want to live in Greece while they keep working for employers or clients outside Greece. It is one of the national long-stay titles in the Migration Code (title Z.1), and it changed in an important way in 2026.
What changed in 2026
Who qualifies
- Third-country nationals who work remotely as employees, freelancers or self-employed professionals, for employers or clients based outside Greece.
- You must not work for employers or clients in Greece. The route is for bringing foreign income here, not for joining the Greek labour market.
- You need a stable net monthly income of at least €3,500, after tax. The threshold rises by 20% for a spouse or partner and by 15% for each child — a couple with one child needs at least €4,725 a month. Income has to be regular and documented, not a one-off.
- Health insurance covering you in Greece, and a clean criminal record.
How it works, step by step
- Prepare the file in your country of residence: passport, proof of your remote work (employment contract or client contracts and invoices), proof of income, health insurance, criminal record certificate and the required declarations. Foreign public documents usually need an apostille and a certified translation.
- Apply for the national Z.1 visa at the Greek consulate responsible for where you live. The visa is valid for up to 12 months.
- Move and settle in. Get a tax number (AFM) and sort out housing — you will need an address.
- Apply for the residence permit before the visa expires, at the Aliens and Migration directorate of the Decentralised Administration covering where you live, if you want to stay on. If you still meet the conditions, a two-year permit is issued, which can be renewed while the conditions continue to be met.
Family members
A spouse or registered partner and minor children can come with you on the same route, with their own documents. The income threshold rises for each of them, as above. Family members on this route may not work in Greece either.
Tax: settle this before you move
The visa does not decide your tax position. Living in Greece for more than 183 days in a year generally makes you Greek tax resident, with Greek filing obligations. One common misunderstanding: the 50% income tax relief for new residents (article 5Γ) is tied to Greek-source employment or business income, so it does not apply to a digital nomad without it. Get tax advice for your situation before you apply.
Common mistakes
- Planning to arrive visa-free and apply later — that route closed in February 2026.
- Contracts that end soon after arrival, or income that cannot be shown as regular.
- Taking on a Greek client "just for a while". If you want to work in Greece, you need a different permit.
- Leaving apostilles and translations to the last week.
If you will stop working, the financially independent person route may fit better. If a Greek company wants to hire you, the EU Blue Card or another work route is the one to look at.
